The Ease of Being Together
A recent trip with longtime friends reminded me of the beauty of growing older together. Through shared laughter, simple acts of kindness, and decades of friendship, I found myself reflecting on gratitude, meaningful connections, and how the people we surround ourselves with reflect what we value in life.

Recently, I spent a few wonderful days in South Carolina with a group of close friends. It was a trip to celebrate three special people turning 50 this year, but it turned out to be a celebration of something much more - our friendship.
Last year, four of us went on a personal retreat to celebrate my 50th birthday. This year, we brought our significant others along. Seven of us altogether.
Two of my friends have known each other since they were just 10 years old, when they danced together. The rest of us have known one another for over 20 years. We have celebrated countless birthdays, Thanksgivings, Christmases, New Year's gatherings, and many important moments in our lives. Yet, surprisingly, we had never taken a trip together like this as a group.
From Friday afternoon until Monday morning, we did practically everything together - grocery shopping, cooking, cleaning up, exploring the town, walking on the beach, and simply hanging out in the living room.
And when I say everything together, I really mean everything!
What struck me was how natural and effortless it all felt.
When preparing dinner, everyone naturally found something to contribute. No one needed to assign responsibilities or keep track of who did what. There were no drama or fuss, just plenty of laughter, conversations, and enjoying each other's company.
Perhaps one of the beautiful things about long-lasting friendship is that we know each other's personalities, habits, and quirks. There is less need to impress, explain, or pretend.
We can simply be ourselves.
This trip was also a celebration of three of my friends turning 50 this year.
Before the trip, I had a little project of my own. I wanted to create a photo slideshow for each of them, capturing their journey from childhood to the present.
I reached out to their families and our mutual friends and gathered more than 600 photographs altogether!
Going through those pictures was quite an experience. Seeing their younger selves and the many moments we had shared reminded me how much life we have already lived.
On our last evening, I surprised them with their individual slideshows. We revisited memories, laughed at old photographs, and celebrated their lives. Another friend had thoughtfully prepared a little gift for each of them, making the evening even more special.
It was a beautiful way to end our trip.
The following morning, we all got up early, packed, and headed to the airport together. Once again, everything went smoothly. Everyone was mindful of the schedule and considerate of one another.
Sometimes, thoughtfulness shows itself in the simplest ways.
After passing through security, we took one final group photograph, followed by lots of hugs before heading to our different flights.
Goodbye for now. We would see each other again at Thanksgiving!
As November arrives, I find myself reflecting on what it means to be grateful.
Of course, I am grateful for the trip and the wonderful memories we created. But more than anything, I am grateful for the people with whom I get to share these experiences.
Something else came to mind during this trip. Perhaps the people we choose to surround ourselves with also tell us something about who we are.
I believe we naturally attract people who share similar values and ways of looking at life. That doesn't mean we are all alike. We each have our own personalities, strengths, weaknesses, and quirks. But somehow, we complement one another. We understand each other's sense of humor, know when to offer support, and have learned to accept one another as we are.
These friendships remind me of the values I hold dear and give me a sense that I am walking a path that feels right for me.
Over the years, we have grown and changed, celebrated happy occasions, and supported one another through different chapters of life. Somewhere along the way, these friends have become family.
And I feel incredibly lucky to be part of it.
Sometimes, the greatest gift isn't what we do or where we go, but simply who we get to share our lives with.
Wishing you all a November filled with gratitude, meaningful connections, and moments of togetherness.
Happy Thanksgiving!
Best wishes,
Mandy
